My email Inbox is usually inundated with fake pleas from spammers, but every so often one turns out to be a genuine call for help. So, today I heed that call as the organizer makes a compelling case and got me ultimately asking – Why do we, as a society, turn singers, actors and athletes to celebrities and not scientists and engineers?

A complex question indeed. One which the 3rd USA Science & Engineering Festival (aka “Woodstock of Science”) could help answer with its unique approach to bringing awareness to the contributions of scientists and engineers – infusing fun, entertaining and education together. “Our event is analogous to an art, music or food Festival, but it is focused on Science and Engineering,” Larry Bock, founder of the USA Science & Engineering Festival said. “There will be over 3,000 hands-on activities and over 150 stage shows. And — while having fun — participants can leave with info about scholarships, internships, jobs and more.”

Why have a science Festival? “Society gets what it celebrates! As a culture, we celebrate actors, pop stars and athletes and we generate a lot of them, but we do not celebrate science and engineering,” Bock wrote in his email to editors today, April 7, 2014. “Your efforts could inspire the kid who will eventually find the cure for cancer.” A prospect that made it impossible to not put a stake on. As an editor, I just simply could not ignore Bock’s call for help.

The “Woodstock of Science” has a line up of guests that include Bill Nye (the Science Guy), Mike Rowe (Dirty Job), National Geographic Brain Games Illusionist Apollo Robbins, Science Channel’s Chris Hackett, “tech evangelist” David Pogue, futurist Michio Kaku, inspirational role models like Travis Mills and Amanda Boxtel, Nobel Laureates, National Space and Aeronautics Administration (NASA) and private space flight astronauts and Titanic explorer David Gallo. Joining them from the pop culture front are the cast members of The Big Bang Theory, House and Breaking Bad, Grammy Award-winning group They Might Be Giants, as well as Curious George, The Cat in the Hat and Sid the Science Kid.

The 3rd USA Science & Engineering Festival kicks off in just 18 days on April 26-27 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. And here is the best part, it is open to the public free of charge.
